Candidate of Technical Sciences (2001), Associate Professor (2003), Doctor of Technical Sciences (2015), Professor (2017). His career progressed from assistant and senior lecturer to associate professor in the Department of Theoretical Mechanics. He subsequently worked as Head of the International Students Sector, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Automotive Engineering, Vice-Rector for Research, and First Vice-Rector of the Belarusian-Russian University. Since January 16, 2019, he has served as Rector of the Belarusian-Russian University and, concurrently, as a professor in the Department of Fundamentals of Machine Design.
His research interests include the theory, calculation, and design of compact energy-efficient drives, including new-type mechanical transmissions (with intermediate rolling elements), spherical mechanisms, and computer modeling of technical systems. He leads the Mechanical Drive Systems Testing Laboratory as Scientific Director and has authored over 300 scientific works, including eight monographs and three study guides. He has received 44 patents for inventions and utility models. M. E. Lustenkov has supervised two Candidate of Technical Sciences researchers.
Member of two dissertation councils of the Republic of Belarus (K.02.18.01 and D.02.18.01). Since 2019 – member of the Higher Attestation Commission under the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.
